Book News

For all of you who have kindly asked after my new book, Silence: A User's Guide, there is good news. I have just completed drafting Part I, which consists of seven chapters, and I've already started working on Part II. I'm hoping to have a complete draft by the end of the year. So please don't lose heart: it's on the way!

It's also the reason I've been a bit slow with blog posts: hope now to improve!

Thank you all for your patience!

Hi Maggie,
Hope you had a great summer! The picture of the Ugly Duchess resembles some depictions I've seen of the Urisk from Scottish folklore. The Urisk was not a particularly attractive creature and it preferred solitude for the most part except around harvest time.
In your last entry you referred to the lack of teachers and I tend to agree with you on that point. I assume that in this case you are talking about "spiritual" teachers for lack of a better word. I am inclined to believe that at this point our most gifted teachers are the animals that populate this planet. They remind me of the simple beauty of the ordinary. Watching my dog play with other dogs or my cat drinking from his dish is a joy to behold.
In your last entry you made a reference to Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Seeing his name reminded me of a book that I had read this summer called What It Is Like TO Go To War by Karl Marlantes who was a US Marine involved in combat during the Vietnam War. In the book he touches on a number of topics relating to Ecstasy, Transcendence, Shadow Self, Power and the Feminine. It is really a gut wrenching read and it has helped me understand my own dark forces a little more. I think the book seemed especially helpful after reading the extract you posted in July by Stephen Emmott called Ten Billion. Thing don't look good.
